SUMMARY OF INSTRUCTIONS AND HOMILIES

DURING AUGUST 2-4, 2002
RETREAT AT EWTN and THE SHRINE OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

FRIDAY EVENING MASS HOMILY – FATHER  ANTHONY

Jesus spoke to St. Francis and told him to go and build His Church.
First Order and way of life of St. Francis spread following a new way of life in the Church.
Second Order was St. Clare and the Poor Clares.
Third Order was the secular way of St. Francis.

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels of Portiuncula (the little portion).  The little church, "the little portion", (the maternal womb of the Blessed Mother) with basilica built around it.

Jesus in his life on earth always reduced Mary to the lowest of places, not in a rude fashion though, because Jesus loved Her. In earthly terms, the lowest, but in heavenly terms, the highest.

SATURDAY MORNING MASS HOMILY – FATHER WADE

On First Saturday we honor the Immaculate Heart of Mary. If you do not have Marian devotion, your worship is not complete.

Everything is in the Catechism. No Catholic home should be without the Catechism of the Catholic Church. No priest's shelf should be without it. There should be no liberalism preached from the pulpit.

Father discussed  Paragraph 971 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in detail.

SATURDAY MORNING INSTRUCTION – FATHER WADE

Sacred Heart of Jesus - 1st Friday
Immaculate Heart of Mary - 1st Saturday

The Sacred Heart devotion is tied to Divine Mercy devotion. We have to rekindle our Catholic spirituality. In your family go to Confession every two weeks. The Church's recommendation is weekly reception of the Eucharist. The sanctifying grace comes to us with the seven sacraments; the actual graces (as lending helps to us by God) by making an act of the will and going back to Confession. God is author of the Sacraments, but not bound by the Sacraments. Bow your head every time you mention or hear the name of Jesus.

"Outside the Catholic Church there is no salvation." In Paragraph 846 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, it tells us that where there is salvation, there is the Catholic Church. There is the one truth Faith.

Sacred Tradition - the Church is necessary for salvation. The one Christ is the one sole mediator of salvation between God and man.

Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do His will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation. (Lumen Gentium, 16). They are invisible members of the mystical body of Christ; for example, the Hindu.

The celebration of any of the seven sacraments is Sacred Liturgy, not only the Holy Mass. The Church is the sole mediator. The Church is the sacrament of salvation.

HEALING SERVICE – DEACON MARK

We see the power today of people touching Christ. We see the healings that Jesus worked in the Gospels-a sign of His divinity and a sign of the kingdom at hand. He does not heal everyone. Padre Pio would exhort people to carry their cross, especially religious.

Christ takes the weight of all the sins upon Himself. Christ healed the woman hemorrhaging. She had faith.

Our Mass, rosary, etc., can become routine; laziness can set in.

We can go to Adoration and come into physical contact with Christ. Are we focused and recollected when we are at the Sacraments? Jesus encouraged us to be present and focused on Him and press through the crowd of noise in the world.

SUNDAY MORNING MASS HOMILY - FATHER  FRANCIS

Revelation reveals three forms of what God wants to reveal to us.
Our Lord multiplied the loaves and the fish.
Reading Scripture - always think of Jesus Christ and look at Him.
There is the bread from Heaven that will satisfy us.
We are receptors to objective revelation. It is not dependent upon us.
Subjective revelation is God's will in our lives.
Children need to look at Mom and Dad for everything.
Adults - our vocation, Scripture - reveals how we are to live.

What is God's will for the community of Brothers and Priests?  They are the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word, not EWTN priests, with Mother Angelica as the Foundress. Many priests come through there, and they are privileged to hear their preaching. Father read a letter written by Mother to the priests in 1991 which came through the power of the Holy Spirit. She told them what was expected of them - you will mold them, feed them the truth. You will preach the truth, the Catechism of the Catholic Church. You will find necessary the grace of contemplation to fulfill your mission. It is necessary to seek humility. Contemplation, virtue and high morals should be rooted in your hearts, as well as Adoration of the Holy Eucharist, devotion to Our Lady, St. Francis and St. Louis de Montfort.
