September 4-6, 1998 Retreat at EWTN FRIDAY NIGHT MASS HOMILY - FR. AUGUSTINE We have a tendency to judge others and even ourselves. We must have compassion and mercy on others and not judge them. We can judge the act, but not the person. We should not even judge ourselves. Lest we fall into a trap. Leave judgment to God. If you cannot forgive others their sins, the Father cannot forgive you yours. Clothe the memories of hurt with compassion. Exercise compassion, gentleness and love of heart. SATURDAY MORNING MASS HOMILY - FR. RAY BOURQUE Be humble. Everything we have, our "beauty", our intelligence, our wit, our health, our wealth, everything, comes from God. Give credit to God for all things. We can do nothing by ourselves. Do not grow self-important. What is a Christian? A Christian is someone like Jesus on the way to Calvary. If you want to drop names, it is better to say, "I spoke to Jesus." Jesus made fun of the many silly rules the Jews had in existence by which they had to live. Jesus was Mary’s life. Think of the suffering Mary went through watching Jesus’ passion and death. SATURDAY MORNING INSTRUCTION - FR. JOSEPH Judge not lest Ye be judged. Animals are mentioned many times in the Bible. We can wander about just like the little chicks. God wants us to be under His protection, but He does not force us. We can either refuse or draw closer to God. Nothing on earth or heaven can separate us from God. There are three R’s in our relationship with God: 1) RECOGNIZE God’s love. The human being was made to be loved and to recognize the goodness of existing. The rest of creation is not able to love in return. As we grow in prayer, we know more about God and can love more. Recognize God by being thankful for all God has given us - everything. 2) RECEIVE God’s love. Do not look too much at our own faults. Look more at the Lord, even when we are sinners. Prepare to receive by spending time in prayer; by receiving the sacraments. Receipt of the sacraments is a powerful moment of receiving God’s graces. Receive God with love and devotion. Never take the Eucharist for granted. It is a gift from God. 3) RESPOND to God’s love. Don’t be angry or bitter, that’s the devil’s work. It is for us to give thanks for all that God has given us. If we recognize, if we receive, then we respond. St. Francis’ whole life was a response to God. Perfect joy is enduring all failures, all discomforts, all heartaches, all of everything else. Nothing on earth can take it away. Respond in thanksgiving. Make every thought, word and action a response to God’s love. Recognize the millions of ways God’s love is given to us. Receive all that love He wants to give us. Let us respond to that love He has given us. "Without Love, We Have Nothing." SATURDAY AFTERNOON INSTRUCTION - DARRELL BENNETT These are important times we live in. Stay focused to your vocation in life and teachings of the Church. September 19 in the Feast of Our Lady of LaSalette. She weaped at LaSalette because the people lost the importance of Sunday and meatless Fridays. Holy Father wants us to respect Sundays. Do penance to atone for our sins. Holy Father amended the Code of Canon Law to make clear Jesus is present in the Eucharist and women will not be ordained as priests. At the direction of the Holy Father, the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops must reorganize and at the same time save face in doing it. Miracle of the Rosary Mission as a group renews its commitment in the Act of Consecration, praying the Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Chaplet of St. Michael, and reading Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. How do we respond to things that happen to us? Pray that we respond the way Jesus wants us to and Our Lady has asked us to. We accomplish this through prayer. We must Respond, not React. News from MRM: a new publication of MRM instead of Thy Kingdom Come, called Mission Moments will be forthcoming, and a booklet containing the prayers used by MRM will also be forthcoming. We must have complete trust and total abandonment. If you pray, everything will work out. SATURDAY HEALING SERVICE - FR. FRANCIS Jesus came to serve not to be served. Jesus is here before us now, body, blood, soul, and divinity. Be not afraid. We must go out and carry that message. We must evangelize the world. Not only must we have the faith, we must live that faith. We have a duty to evangelize. St. Paul said, boast of the Lord and not of yourself. We are nothing before Jesus Christ. Our boast is Jesus crucified. If you should die today and God asked you why He should let you into heaven, what would be your answer? Most Catholics do not know how to get to heaven. SATURDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY - FR. RAY BOURQUE We are members of the priesthood of Jesus Christ. First the Jews were a priestly people, then we are. There are two kinds of priesthood: common and ordained. An object that is known is known according to the depth of the knowledge of the knower. The more Mary is known in your heart, the deeper your knowledge will be of Her. John Eudes said that the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ is like a burning furnace of love for Mary. All the blessings in Mary are without limit. How much is Jesus Christ in love with Mary? Jesus Christ loved the Father the most, then Mary next. The love of Jesus Christ for Mary is more than the love He had for the angels and saints together. He owed Her more. She received more privileges and favors than anyone else. Mary is the only human being of all creatures to be elevated above everything else. Mary alone was preserved from original sin. She has the privilege of the Immaculate Conception. Mary is the new Eve and Jesus Christ is the new Adam. Mary is the mother of God, the biggest title of all. Mary was chosen, predetermined, to be the mother of God. She was without sin; She was a virgin. Mary had the light of reason from the first moment of her conception in Her mother’s womb. She could know, adore and give Herself at the first moment of Her conception. She loved God from her very beginning. No one loved God the way She did. Mary gave Her flesh and blood to Jesus Christ. Mary cooperated in a special way with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. She is the daughter of the Father, mother of the Son and spouse of the Holy Spirit. Mary participated in the mystery of the Incarnation. The biggest thing the Holy Spirit ever did was the Incarnation. This was the hypostatic union - union of the word and human. When Mary conceived, Her flesh and blood became adorable because of Jesus Christ. Think of the love Jesus Christ had for this woman. How can God have a heart of flesh? Mary. Mary had the authority of the father and mother over Jesus. Some theologians believe that since Mary was conceived with faith and reason. She may have made a vow of virginity at conception. She gave life to the giver of life. Jesus enkindled in Her the fire of Divine Love. We don’t say Mary died. Death is punishment for sin, and Mary never sinned. She fell asleep. She is the only one transported to Heaven in Her Assumption. She is crowned in Heaven as Queen. She has power over the saints, and she has more influence over Jesus Christ than all the citizens in Heaven. Co-redemptrix means "with", not equal to Jesus Christ. SUNDAY MASS HOMILY - FR. FRANCIS The second reading was from St. Paul’s letter to Philemon. This is the only letter in the Bible to an individual. St. Paul is pleading mercy to a friend for another friend. He is pleading for a slave, Onesimus, who robbed and ran away. St. Paul pleads, if you value my friendship, you will treat Onesimus as a brother and not have him crucified, but freed. In the Gospel of St. Luke, Jesus says to the young man that he must sell all his possession and follow Him. Also, if anyone does not hate his own father, mother, brother, sister, etc., he cannot be Jesus’ disciple. Jesus is making a point. Jesus Christ must be number one in your life, even above your family. When Jesus Christ is number one, everything else disappears. Jesus Christ cannot be thought of as second or as a sideline. We must give Jesus 100%. The Lord does not want us to be lukewarm. We must renounce all that we have. No, it is not necessary that we live in the streets, but we cannot serve God and money. Detachment - detachment is the absence of venial sin and mortal sin. Tests to determine if we have detachment: 1) if we think we are detached, we are not; 2) as we sit in prayer we have distractions, we are not detached. Jesus Christ must be the focal point interiorly. We cannot go through the motions, when a full heart and love is not in it. The message to us is: must be with Jesus Christ wholeheartedly all the time. Prayer is not done as an obligation, but spontaneously with love. Jesus is in your heart at all times. When you pray, you have no distractions. Pope John Paul II says: Who ever has the faith must treasure it as the most important treasure of his life. God alone can satisfy the desires of the heart. Detachment is not only about material things, but also hopefulness. We must be confident that we are going to heaven. We must take our temptations - are we hot, cold or lukewarm to the Lord. John Paul II - we must speak out that Jesus Christ is our hope. |
