My Dear Friends, One of the greatest discoveries or revelations in the New Testament is the Blessed Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The pagans in the Old Testament had images of many various kinds of gods. The Hebrews, on the other hand, had been drilled by God that there is really only one God. We see this again and again throughout the whole Bible. For example, the Lord says, “you shall not have other gods beside me.” (Ex 20:3) We’re familiar with the text, “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone!” (Dt 6:4) “Whoever sacrifices to any god except to the Lord alone shall be doomed.” (Ex 22:19) The Hebrews were drilled into this kind of thinking. The prophets, patriarchs, and kings, one after another, brought to the floor the idea that there is only one God. This was very important to them. I think that some of the Jewish people even today have a hard time believing otherwise because the concept of only one God has been so deeply imbedded in their minds. Yet, when we study the Bible, specifically the New Testament, there is a new discovery, a new dimension. “After Jesus was baptized, He came from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the Heavens saying, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’ “ (Mt 3:16-17) Again in Matthew we read: “After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.” (Mt 17:1-2) “While he (Peter) was still speaking, behold a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’ “ (Mt 17:5) Throughout His ministry Jesus explained in very clear terms the importance of having an awareness of the presence of the Blessed Trinity. In the New Testament Jesus reveals the fact that our God is one God and in that God there are three persons, The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Because we’re considering the presence of God, I would like to ask you: How much room is there in your heart for God, for the three persons of God? When Jesus Christ came to Bethlehem there was no room in the inn so Jesus Christ was born in a stable. I think that many Christians have made a lot of room for the Son, but they may not have much room for the Father. How much room is there is your heart for the Father? Would you say that God the Father really occupies a place of importance in your life or would you say that in your heart there is room only for Jesus? I have concluded after dealing with so many people in the past years that most people can’t say very much about the Father. If they can’t say very much, I’m afraid they don’t know Him that well, that they don’t have much of a relationship with Him. What do you think? If an individual cannot speak even a half minute about the Father, then maybe we might conclude that he/she has very little room in the heart for the Father. Is there room for the Holy Spirit in your heart? Let me share with you this beautiful scriptural text. “But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate (Paraclete, the Holy Spirit) will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.” (Jn 16:7) So it is important to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit. It was more beneficial to us that Jesus go so that He might send the Holy Spirit to us. So, how much room is there for the Holy Spirit in your heart? I thank God because in the past few years more and more people are understanding that the Holy Spirit is the Lord and Giver of Life and they are making room for Him, allowing Him to really be what He is supposed to be. What is your reaction to the question: “In your heart, in the inside of you, is there room for only one, or for two or for three?” How much room is there? Do you have room for the Father and Jesus? Do you also have room for the Holy Spirit? How much room is there? Reflect prayerfully and seriously over these questions and give yourself an honest answer. Think of your own prayers, the prayers that you say with others and the prayers that you compose. I hope you are able to offer many kinds of spontaneous prayers that out of the abundance of your heart you can just speak with God as you would to a dear friend. Do you find yourself speaking to Jesus most of the time? Do you find yourself speaking to the Father sometime? Our God is a God in which there are three persons. The New Testament reveals to us the mystery of the Blessed Trinity which gives us a much deeper understanding of the nature of our God. He is one God in which there are three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. No one could have imagined such a truth; this mystery of faith had to be revealed to us by God Himself in His holy Word. So what God is in you? Is it the God of the Old Testament? The God, Jesus without His Father? Without the Holy Spirit? Or is the God in your heart the God that has been revealed in such a beauty in the New Testament, the Blessed Trinity? A God that is so beautiful that He is a family: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Father is the Thinker filled with knowledge and joy, who created the world and then revealed Himself; a God who recreated the world after the fall of Adam and Eve. God the Father recreated the world. And do you know how He did it? By sending His Son, Jesus, to redeem mankind. Through this act of redemption, He then becomes our Father and He invites us to be with Him and His family; with the Son and the Holy Spirit; invites us to go to heaven. He made all kinds of promises. He gave us faith with power and provides for all of our needs. He adopts us through Baptism so we can go to heaven with Him. And the Son! The beautiful Jesus! He is the Word and the Truth and the Peace and He comes to save. That’s what His name means. “Jesus” means “Savior”. He is the Messiah promised for thousands of years, the Anointed One, the Christ who is our Mediator with God the Father. He came to redeem us by shedding His blood for us and by becoming our brother. Jesus opened the gates of heaven and fulfilled all the promises of the Father. He came to take away our sins, humbly heals us, and feeds us so that we can go to heaven. The Holy Spirit is the pull, the attraction between the Father and the Son. He is our teacher, the Spirit of Love. His job is to make saints out of us. He wants to show us how to listen to God. The Holy Spirit stands by us. He wants to dwell in us. He is the interior decorator who wants to adorn our hearts and our lives. He wants to make us one with God and shows us how to surrender to God. His very presence is proof that all of this is true. He fills our hearts; gently, He gives us life. He makes us grow through the sacrament of Confirmation. So I ask you again: How much room is there in your heart? Do you have room only for Jesus or do you have room for the Father and the Holy Spirit also? Thank you God for the revelation of the Blessed Trinity. God Bless you all! |
