Thy Kingdom Come - March 2024

In the Footsteps of Jesus

SAINT OF THE MONTH

Saint Joseph – March 19th

Author: Fr. Dean Danos

Saint Joseph is the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus.  Though Scripture contains few details about the life of St. Joseph, those details tell us a good deal about his faith and love.  Scripture tells us that when Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant, he planned to divorce her quietly, so she would not be shamed.  Yet, when an Angel of the Lord appeared to him and told him to take Mary into his home, St. Joseph willingly obeyed. He cared for and protected Mary and her unborn child.

Later, when the angel told Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt, Joseph did not hesitate at all.  When they returned from Egypt, Joseph took them to Nazareth, where they would remain safe.  Years later, when Jesus was mistakenly left behind in Jerusalem, Joseph and Mary searched with "great anxiety" until they found him.

A loving, faithful, obedient man, St. Joseph is the patron saint of the Church, of fathers, of families, of married couples, of workers, of carpenters, of engineers, of social workers, and of social justice.  St. Joseph is also the patron saint of the dying, because it is believed that he died with Jesus and Mary by his side.

On his feast day, we ask St. Joseph to pray for our families, that we might grow closer to Christ.

Prayer: St. Joseph, You lovingly cared for God's Son, Jesus, and his Blessed Mother Mary.  As patron saint of the Catholic Church, please pray that we, as followers of Jesus, will care for each other too.  Amen.
